Controller Butkovitz Issues Statement on School District's Hidden Artwork

PHILADELPHIA - City Controller Alan Butkovitz today issued the following statement on the School District of Philadelphia's artwork pieces that were removed from storage and placed in a temporary exhibit:

"This is a partial victory for the teachers, parents, students and community members who fought for years to have the artwork removed from storage and back on display. I strongly encourage the School District to create permanent displays in our schools and within our art institutions for all to enjoy and not return the pieces to storage.

"The School District should also explore opportunities to merge current marketing efforts with the city's tourism agencies and its art sectors."

Since 2006, Controller Butkovitz has performed audits and reviews of the School District's artwork. In 2014, he called on the Schools District to display the more than 200 pieces of artwork that were in the storage facility and explore opportunities to partner with art institutions located in the city.
