AUDITOR TRAINEE DUTIES: The City of Philadelphia Controller’s Office seeks an individual who is highly motivated with the vision and desire to help advance the efficiency and accountability of City government as we progress into the twenty-first century. Individuals begin their careers in the Controller’s Office performing meaningful and varied auditing assignments relating to various aspects of Philadelphia government. Auditors increase the financial integrity and accountability of the city by reviewing and evaluating the financial practices of its departments and agencies. In addition to providing traditional financial audits, management and performance reviews are conducted by the Controller’s Office auditors to provide city administrators with creative solutions to the complex problems facing local government today. Assignments are rotated to provide the auditor with unique challenges and valuable experience over the entire range of City services. Work performed as an employee of the City of Philadelphia Controller’s Office has been determined to represent qualifying experience for CPA examination purposes. REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting. Candidates may apply for the position and be accepted up to 9 months prior to graduation upon the successful completion of the required Civil Service examination. Must be a resident of Philadelphia within one year of date of hire. ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND: The Controller’s Office was established as the City’s Auditing Department in 1951 when voters adopted the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter. The charter gives the Controller’s Office broad authority and responsibility for the protection of the public interest in the handling of City money. The Controller’s Office is directed by an elected official who is independent of the City administration whose operations are audited. |
